When examining Peyton Mannings rookie card a few cards stick out for you to consider. Many of his cards are grade worthy, but a few of the cards in particular stick out as being his best cards of his rookie season.

Top cards include:

The 1998 SP authentic Peyton Manning Rookie is definitely the best rookie card. The cards were numbered making them much more valuable to collectors. This card is hard to find in gradeable condition - but holds the highest value.

The 1998 Upper Deck Peyton Manning Rookie Card. Here is the hidden gem of the Peyton Manning rookie card lot. This card is the only card of Peyton that still is under-priced. Lets face it this quarterback may hold all the records when he finishes and any card is likely to go up in value. Finding cards that may appreciate 50% or more in next 5 years is a great value.

The 1998 Topps and Bowman Chrome Peyton Manning Cards. These are probably the highest quality produced cards of the lot. However, their are quite a few in circulation and these are not likely to rise in value as fast as the Upper Deck card.

Be diligent, if you watch Ebay now and in the off season - some great deals can be found on this superstar. Please read some of my posts on how to price cards and buy cards on ebay to learn more.
Take a look at some of the values below.

What are the hottest rookie football cards of the 2008 NFL season? This can best be answered by looking at the what cards are being sold in the most quantity and volume in the marketplace.

One of the best ways to look at what cards are hot is to look at ebay and some of the related tools that help analyze ebay trends. When looking at Ebay and the trend over the last 2 weeks the highest priced cards on the list are auto rookie cards. Some of the selected cards that are going for very high prices include: Matt Forte, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Darrin McFadden. The auto rookie cards of these future NFL superstars are already going for values greater than $200.

If we use the terapeak analyzer of items being sold on ebay. Using the term 2008 Rookie Football Card. We can see that in the last 7 days, over 260 items were listed on ebay with over 130 of those items selling. These items fetched an average price of over $19.00 per item sold on ebay. Of the sets of rookie cards being sold the: 2008 UD SP Rookie Edition NFL Football Sealed Hobby Box is the most popular set being sold this year.

If you are considering this hobby as an investment opportunity use these tools often to get a general pulse of what the trading community is buying and selling.

Rookie cards: football or baseball which is better and which should you own. Their is no question that baseball cards from years past were worth more than the old football cards. If you look at the values of the superstars of the 1970's and 1980's, the baseball cards like Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Pete Rose are all worth significantly more than the football cards of the same era.

However, the rookie football cards of today are worth every bit as much as the rookie baseball cards. The superstars like Tom Brady, Ladanian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson and the rising superstar Matt Ryan are some of the highest value rookie cards on the market today. If you are collecting cards to appreciate in value it only stands to reason that the most popular league in all of sports the NFL would have the highest price rookie cards. Every year the NFL produces several new superstars that all have phenominal rookie cards including autograph cards and jersey cards. In a world where most investments are doing poorly the investment in a great hobby can hae great financial reward as well.

As a collector of rookie football cards one of the most daunting challenges is determining the value of your football trading cards. Especially as a new collector the process can be a little overwhelming and in fact it may seem intimidating to the point you do not want to collect the memorabillia. I have written a series of posts describing how to value your football cards by using Ebay, Terapeak and pricing guides from the grading services. The truest value of all of those prices is the information that comes from Ebay as it is the value people will pay today.

Now that you have an idea of what people will pay for a rookie football card - the question is what is my Football Trading Card Value for my cards. To answer this question we need to examine what are the factors that are included when a grading service like PSA or Becketts grades the card.

Lets say you have two rookie football cards you wish to evaluate. A Topps Walter Payton rookie card and a Upper Deck SPX, Adrian Peterson rookie card what are the features that are used in grading the cards.
1) Age
Age is important as in general older common cards are valued more than newer cards. However, the cards produced today are produced with much different quality and standards so age is not the biggest factor in determining card value.
2) Quality
Look at the corners and edges - are they crisp and sharp or are they softened. This is a very important feature that is looked at when grading cards. Especially the older cards. A older card like Walter Payton is not likely to have great corners and edges so a card with great corners will command a much higher value.
3) Centering
Is the picture centered? Again the older cards the production standards were weak so finding a card that was not crooked and has a picture that is equally centered in the card is rare. This will automatically boost the price of the card.
4) Surface quality
Is the card smooth and clean or is the surface faded, bubbled or have some other defect. This is yet one more characteristic that affects card value.
5) Supply and Demand
Perhaps the biggest factor affecting card value is supply and demand. Many cards like Adrian Peterson are produced with limited production runs so the supply is low. When a player like this has an unbelievalbe rookie campaign the value skyrockets because the demand goes way up. A perfect storm creating high valued cards.
6) Limited Edition - specialty cards
The new inventions of the auto card and jersey cards gave a new look for card collectors and this also helps drive prices up.

What other factors impact prices? Please comment.

Collecting Price Guides

Building on the previous posts this section will discuss how to benchmark your cards through card collecting price guides. Once you have gone through and examined the Ebay listings and Terapeak listings related to your card it is now time to start classifying your football card's quality relative to the other cards that are for sale.

The best way to classify card value is to benchmark the card against a grading service. Each of the major grading services offer a card collecting price guide for sale. Becketts and PSA, the two major card grading services have retail guides to help pinpoint the value of the card. Looking at your card, the grading service will look at many features of the card that will establish the price of the card. In general, the grading companies will look at the following features: corner sharpness, edges, picture centering, surface quality, and vividness of graphics. These will be compared to a standard that will then establish the grade of the card. The grade of the card helps to establish the overall value of the card.

In the next post we will start to explore how these features using some actual cards.

This is the second post in a series that discusses in detail how to price football cards that are not graded by one of the premeir card grading services like SGC and PSA.

In my first post I discussed how to used the advanced search feature of EBAY to learn what the market will pay for your non-graded rookie football cards. The next step to determining the price of your card is to do a little more advanced seraching on EBAY. Now we will use a free research tool named Terapeak to get more information about the history of the prices people pay for the cards you are trying to determine the price of.

Go to Terapeak website and click on the price report tab and enter the name of the card you are trying to evaluate. Click on the keywords section and enter the name of the card you are trying to evaluate like Joe Montana rookie. Terapeak then will display a report of all the cards sold in the last 7 days. It will display the high, low and average price and from this you will be able to ballpark your card's value.

In my next post we will discuss how to examine the features of your card and narrow in the price of your card.

One of the challenges as a rookie football card collector is learning how to accurately price football cards. The introduction of the grading services such as PSA, and BGS have taken alot of guess work out of the pricing for cards that are graded. However, many people do not want to spend up to $15 per card to grade their football cards and find out that the card is only worth $10 or less.

This week I will be writing a series of posts on how to price football cards that are not graded.

Rule 1: Your card is worth what the market will pay for it!
The best way to determine what the market will pay for your football cards is through EBAY. If you click on any of my store links and head over to EBAY you can find out the current prices of cards very quickly.

Step 1: Make sure you are signed up with ebay
Step 2: Sign in to ebay and click on the advanced search link on top of the screen
Step 3: Enter in the name of the player and click on the COMPLETED LISTINGS ONLY option - then hit search

You should have a complete listing of all the cards that sold in the last week and the prices. This is the starting point to pricing football cards
