The 1952 Bowman Van Brocklin Rookie Card is attractive to collectors because Van Brocklin was the most prolific passer of his day – and any day in one respect: His 554 yards passing in a game remains an NFL record. Van Brocklin had a very strong arm with good accuracy in a career that took him from the Los Angeles Rams to the Philadelphia Eagles. He led both teams to NFL Championships.

Career Overview

After a stellar college career at the University of Oregon, the Rams selected Van Brocklin in the 4th round of the 1949 draft, the 37th player taken. He split time at QB with Bob Waterfield and in 1950 the Rams were the highest-scoring team in NFL history, at 38.8 points a game. The record still stands. In 1951, Van Brocklin had his 554 yard game and more importantly led the Rams to the NFL Championship.

Van Brocklin signed with the Eagles in 1958 and was their quarterback when they won the 1960 NFL Championship. He retired after that season and went into coaching. In his 12-year career, Norm Van Brocklin was selected to 9 Pro Bowl and was All-Pro in 1960. In 1971, Norm Van Brocklin was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The 1948 Leaf Card #6 Bobby Lane is a very collectible card. Layne was an All-American quarterback at the University of Texas in 1947 and a first-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears with the third overall pick. He played professional football for 15 seasons.

Career Overview

Layne played one year in Chicago before essentially holding out. He forced George Halas to trade him to the New York Bulldogs who traded him to Detroit a year later. Bobby Layne led the Detroit Lions to the NFL Championship in 1952 and 1953, and won a third with Detroit in 1957 after breaking his leg late in the year. He was traded to Pittsburg in 1958 and eventually retired after an outstanding career in which he was selected for the Pro Bowl 5 times.

Bobby Layne held multiple NFL records including attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns. He is credited with creating the two-minute offense. However, his teammates respected him for his leadership abilities and his will to win perhaps more than for his talent. Bobby Layne hung up his cleats in 1962 and in 1967 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The 1948 Leaf Card #6 Bobby Lane is the most sought-after Bobby Layne card and easily the most valuable. One sale of the card is known to have brought a seller $1,015.75. That card was graded PSA excellent-mint 6 condition.

The card shows a Layne wearing his famous #22 Jersey, arm cocked and ready to deliver the ball downfield. The background to the image is a stark orange-red. The writing on the face of the card offers another clue as to why this card is popular with some collectors. The name Bobby is misspelled as “Bobbie.” The entire inscription reads: Bobbie ‘Blonde Bomber’ Layne. All of the 1948 Leaf Bobby Layne variations have the name misspelled.

Oddly enough, Layne’s name is spelled correctly on the back of the 1948 Leaf Bobby Lane rookie card. The text on the back expounds his great career at the University of Texas where he led the Longhorns to 2 Southwestern Conference championships along with victories in the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl. It notes that as a pitcher for the Longhorn baseball team, Bobby Layne was undefeated in 4 seasons of conference play.

Summary

It’s no wonder this card has excellent value. It would be a fantastic addition to any premium collection of gridiron greats. Jonathan Baldwin was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 26th pick of the 2011 draft. He is expected to get significant playing time his rookie year at wide receiver, helping Kansas City spread the field more than they have been able to do. The Chiefs believe Baldwin can develop quickly into the big target that Matt Cassel has been lacking. Baldwin was a 2-year starter at Pittsburgh. His lower than expected production last year has been mostly attributed to poor quarterback play for Pitt.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Baldwin is 6-5, 225 lbs, and will certainly add some muscle to that frame over the next few years. He'll create mismatches in the defensive backfield with his size and length. His athleticism is outstanding. He was rated the third best WR in the draft pool but some analysts think he may eventually have the best professional career among the top receivers in the draft. His additional strengths include: Locates the football well and catches it away from his body, has very large and strong hands, runs well for his size, will fight for the ball in traffic, outstanding body control and leaping ability, and is willing to block. Because of his size and speed, he has drawn comparisons to San Diego's Vincent Jackson.

In terms of weaknesses, his yards after the catch needs to improve. In the NFL, his routes will need to be more precise as well and he must work on creating separation from defenders. He had a slight reputation as a prima donna at Pitt but maturity and the learning curve he'll face in the NFL should correct that attitude.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Gabbert definitely has the size to play QB in the NFL and 6-5 and 235 lbs. While he played in the shotgun at Missouri, most scouts think he has the footwork to be a good dropback passer. His mechanics are sound and he has good accuracy, even when throwing into tight coverage. He throws equally well when rolling out as he does from the pocket. He has excellent mobility. Scouts note his outstanding anticipation when making timing throws or throws to receivers on crossing routes. Gabbert scored a 42 on the Wonderlic, one of the highest scores ever at the NFL combine.

In terms of weaknesses, some believe he will have a difficult transition from a spread offense to a pro-style offense. He will likely need 2-3 years to develop into a starter as his raw talent matures with the help of coaches and plenty of reps in practice. Not as strong a runner as Cam Newton or Jake Locker. Among things he needs to work on: reads across the field, taking snaps under center and dropping back, and becoming more consistent in his throwing motion.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Locker is an outstanding athlete and at 6-3 and 230 lbs has the size and strength to handle the physical demands of the quarterback position. Also known as an excellent runner, Locker has drawn comparisons to Donovan McNabb and Steve Young for the dual threat he represents. Scouts rated Locker's mechanics among the best of all QB prospects goint into the draft, and well ahead of first pick in the draft Cam Newton. When passing, Locker is an efficient drop-back passer and has a compact, quick throw that scouts love, and also throws well on the move. One of the stronger arms in the draft, Locker is also a pro pitching with a 95 mph fastball. He can make any throw, to any location on the field. He is seen as a high-character person with good leadership skills.

In terms of weaknesses, Locker's accuracy is inconsistent and it is believed it will take him time to adjust to the more complex defenses he'll face in the NFL. His mechanics suffer when pressured. Most scouts think it would be in the Titan's best interest to let Locker learn the game behind a veteran quarterback for 1 or 2 seasons, but they may not have the patience to do that.

Overall, Jake Locker has the talent, arm strength, and size to eventually develop into a top-tier NFL quarterback. Most scouts think it will be a 3-5 year process but that he is a long-term solution for the Titans at QB if he stays healthy.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Julio Jones is considered the most complete receiver in the 2011 draft. He has the size at 6-4, 215 for the NFL as well as the speed and athleticism. Jones runs exceptionally well after the catch and is considered more of a playmaker than A. J. Green or Jonathan Baldwin, the other to WR's taken in the first round. He is very quick off the line and has the speed and strength to free himself from press coverage. Julio Jones locates the ball well and competes for every pass he has a chance for. Jones is a physical receiver and does a very good job blocking when needed. Exceptional acceleration and change of direction are other qualities that give him excellent separation from coverage.

At the next level, Julio Jones will have to become more consistent at catching the ball with his hands. Most scouts think its a concentration issue-- his hands get better the tighter the coverage or tougher the throw, forcing him to focus. He has good short and intermediate distance, but his downfield speed is not exceptional. Jones is coming off of a broken foot and has had other injuries which create some concerns about his durability.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Green is 6-4 and tips the scales at 210 lbs, sure to increase as he spends time with Bengal strenght and conditioning trainers. He has all the tools to be a very productive receiver in the NFL. His body control and ability to make adjustments to the ball are unmatched. He is a deep threat, works well getting open in the Red Zone and can be a go-to receiver on 3rd down. He has shown a willingness to go over the middle and compete for every ball thrown his way. Creates separation with very quick breaks and has outstanding acceleration. Georgia's pro-style offense helped Green learn to run sharp, precise routes.

Green has good hands but not great. No doubt, as they get stronger his ability to hang onto tough balls will improve. In fact, he needs to gain weight and strength to endure in the NFL. Strengths and Weaknesses

Ponder has a quick release and a very accurate throwing arm, and at 6-3, 235 has adequate size to compete in the NFL. He is also athletic and does a good job avoiding the rush, and can make plays with his feet if necessary. He is poised in the pocket ans is tough enough to get off a throw knowing he'll take a hit. His mechanics are very solid and just need refining. Ponder's greatest strengths may be his intelligence and leadership abilities. He's one of the brightest quarterbacks taken in the draft and reads defenses very well, a must for success at the next level. Ponder was an outstanding leader on and off the field at Florida State and that quality should carry over to his professional career.

Things that Christian Ponder will need to work on to be effective at the next level include his deep-ball accuracy and his arm strenght, which is above average but not great. He'll also need to learn to be patient in the pocket and not take off too quickly. Ponder has had shoulder issues and 2 surgeries on his throwing elbow, so his durability may be a concern.

Strengths and Weaknesses

It starts with Newton's incredible size and athleticism. He's 6-5 and 250 pounds and many scouts think he could star virtually anywhere on the field. As a runner, Newton hits gaps quickly and shows explosive speed in the open field. His quick feet can produce elusive change of direction and he also has the size and strength to run over defensive backs. His ability to run the QB draw will keep someone home on the opposing defense just to guard against the possibility. As a passer, he has NFL-caliber arm strength and can effectively make all the necessary throws. Finally, Newton is a natural leader and has won at every level. Most analysts expect him to lead by example on the field.

Newton has a few weaknesses which will need to be corrected for him to reach his potential. His throwing mechanics are fair at best and he relies too much on raw talent and not enough on repetitive technique. His biggest challenge will be to learn to go through his reads and not simply lock on one receiver with one possible alternative.

Mark Ingram was drafted by the New Orleans Saints with the 28th pick of the first round. He was injured for much of his senior year, but has made a full recovery. The Saints thought enough of their draft choice that they quickly traded away Reggie Bush. While the skill set for Ingram is somewhat different, he does have good running skills and is an underrated pass catcher, so he will fill many of the roles Bush was counted on for. Analysts expect Ingram to be a significant part of the Saints offense as long as he stays healthy. Their spread formations will make room for his strong inside running, mostly between the tackles.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Was the top-rated RB in the draft and is a powerful runner who mostly runs inside. He has the patience to wait for a hole to develop and has the explosiveness to hit it quickly. Ingram is a tough back and doesn't go down easily and makes good yardage after contact. His height is just 5-10 but at 215 lbs, he's got plenty of strength. Additional strengths noted by NFL scouts include: Good pass-catching ability out of the backfield, excellent balance and agility both forward and laterally, and the ability to pick running lanes.

On the flip side, Mark Ingram has average speed and won't be a breakaway threat. He'll also need to step up his blocking ability in the NFL. Ingram ran behind an outstanding offensive line at Alabama, relative to the competition, and some analysts suggest that was a larger part of his success than many think.
