Defensive Rookie Stars – NFL Playoffs 2008-2009

In my last post I wrote about how offensive rookie stars can make or break a team during the playoff run. In this post I am writing about some of the defensive rookies that might have a significant impact of the 2008 playoffs.

When it comes to the playoffs, offensive coordinators will usually create schemes that take advantage of a rookie defensive player's inexperience. That inexperience can lead to some big plays by the opposing offenses and potentially change the course of a playoff game. This does give the defensive rookie the opportunity to make plays and become a household name. This year their are a few defensive players that might become difference makers in NFL playoffs this year.

Some of the defensive stars of the future that could make a significant difference this year in the playoffs are:
1)Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Arizona)
An explosive 1st year player who has the ability to make a big. Making 42 tackles, 4 interceptions and 1 defensive touchdown this player has big play written all over him. With Matt Ryan a 1st year player at QB, Cromartie has a legitimate chance to make a big play.
2) Tyrell Johnson (Vikings)
This first year strong safety filled in for Darrin Sharper for over half the season. Strong safeties have the ability to roam and make big plays - a perfect combination for the playoffs. Johnson primarily plays in the nickle package for the Vikings and might be a perfect combination for a big play in the NFL playoffs.
3)Charles Godfrey (FS Carolina)
A true rookie gem in Carolina this year. A first year player that made 61 tackles and created havoc in the middle for opposing tight ends and wide receivers. Godfrey may be in a great opportunity to make plays if his team gets a lead.
