In the 1960’s the Fleer Corporation began to produce football cards to compete with Topps. However, the modern era of football cards did not begin until Topps began full scale production of their football cards in 1968 and started the modern era of football cards. Several great rookie cards stand out from the Topps set including the 1976 Walter Payton Rookie Card, 1982 Joe Montana rookie card and the 1984 Dan Marino rookie and the 1984 John Elway rookie card. Not until 1989 when SCORE began production of football cards did anyone challenge Topps in the football card arena.
Since that time many new and innovative companies have burst on the market. Upper Deck and the SPx lines have created an extremely innovative game authentic line that features patches of game worn jerseys on the card. Playoff Contenders features an awesome set of cards including the highly sought after limited edition autograph (auto) cards. Other manufactures’ have followed suit including the Bowman Refractor autograph Sky Box cards.
