Football cards as we know them today began in the 1950’s when the Topps trading card company began production of their cards. Like every other era, the rookie football cards of this era are gems of the sets. There are many rookie cards in this era that are now household names.
The 1950’s ushered in some of the legends of the NFL. With John Unitas and Bart Starr as the gems of the 1957 football card set, these cards continue to climb in value. In 1958 Jim Brown entered into the NFL and still is considered by many to be the greatest NFL player of all time. Other great rookies of this era include the 1959 Alex Carras rookie card, the 1958 Sonny Jurgensen and the 1957 Paul Horning rookie card. These are the players that shaped the face of the NFL for years to come.
