1970-1979 Rookie Football Cards

While the 1960’s had great players, the 1970’s in the NFL had great teams. The decade of the 1970’s began with the perfect team, the Dolphins and ended with the Pittsburg Steelers ruling the NFL. The terms Steel Curtain, America’s Team, and Silver and Black became common vocabulary for the NFL fan. Who can forget these highlights from the Pittsburg Steelers, the aerobatic catches of Lynn Swann or unbelievable throws from Terry Bradshaw. The Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders gave us some great superstars as well including Tony Dorsett, Randy White and Ken Stabler. These dynasties ruled the decade and as one would expect the rookie cards from these teams are the most sought after cards of the era.

The player that defined the era did not play for one of these football dynasties. From the 1976 football card set include Walter “Sweetness” Payton. Walter Payton defined what a great NFL player should look like. He ultimately became the all time NFL leading rusher playing for a mediocre team.
