Authentic Autographs

When I started collecting football cards the only way to get an autograph of a football player was to get teh actual signature of the player on your card. This was either done at the football games themselves or at card shows. As a collector their was always a risk that the card got damaged during the signature process. This was not a problem if you collected the card because it was cool, but if you were holding it long term for investment or wanted it to be in great shape this was always a risk. The development of authentic DNA autograph and jersey cards have made it much easier as a collector to verify that collecting football cards with autographs can be easily verified. This gives the collector a guarentee that the autograph is real and really adds to the quality of the rookie football card.

Today sadly the last of the inagural class of the NFL Hall of Fame, Slinging Sammy Baugh dies at the age of 94 years old. No other player in the history of the game did more to revolutionize the game that Sammy Baugh. During his reign in the lates 1940's and 1950's he completely dominatated the game from not quaterback position, but at the defensive backfield position and punting position.

Consider some mind blowing statistics from Sammy Baugh. His 51.4 punting average in 1940, is still the highest single season punting average in the history of the NFL. He once has a game where he threw for 4tds and intercepted 4 passes. In 1940, he averaged 245 yards per game and threw for 23 tds in 12 games. That is better than over half of the NFL quaterbacks from last year in a 16 game schedule.

Known as the father of the forward pass, Sammy Baugh was the NFL's first superstar. A nine time all pro and winner of many clutch games Sammy Baugh is the NFL's first rookie football cards. His classic pose on the 1948 card is a time piece for all NFL card collectors. No one can argue the success of the man or the importance he had to the modern day game.

What are some of the other classic contributions from Sammy Baugh? Please Comment.
