Many people ask me why do I still collect football cards, rookie football cards and why do I have a blog about this hobby. Quite simply, I have been collecting rookie football cards for most of my life and I have seen the hobby transform itself from a pasttime to a major business. Despite this I can think of many reasons why a young child should start this great hobby of collecting football cards. One of the negative aspects of the hobby is that the cost of the football cards have gone up making it more expensive to collect. However, the quality of the cards have gone up substantially and the retail of the cards have risen much more than ever before.

This week I am going to give several reasons why it is still fun to collect football cards:

Team Affiliation

• This is a great way for today's youth to become connected with their favorite team and the great players of that team. Rookie football cards give young kids the opportunity to bond with their favorite player early on in their career and they can watch their career through their cards. Nothing was more important than getting a card of your favorite player when you were a child. I loved opening the pack of cards and seeing my hero Fran Tarkington. Because the NFL is the most popular sport, it only makes sense to collect football cards.

Look for the rest of my posts on this topic this week.

Ever since Drew Brees graduated from Purdue he has been touted as being: too small, weak arm and not mobile enough. The San Diego Chargers traded away Brees the year after he had 24 touchdowns and over 3500 yards passing. Since Brees has left the Chargers he has been spectacular - in three seasons as a New Orleans Saint, Brees has passed for 26, 28 and 34 touchdown passes in three consecutive years.

In 2008, Drew Brees arrived as one of the top 2 or 3 quaterbacks in the league. In 2008, he won the prestigious offensive player of the year award. He compiled some staggering stats - over 5000 yards passing and 34 touchdowns, over a 96 passer rating, completing 65% of his passes and averaging over 300 yards a game. Even more impressive is that he did this without Colston and Shockey, their 2 top receivers, for most of the year. Brees often got criticized in the past for his arm strenght and size - but what he lacks in those departments he makes up in accuracy and intelligence. Brees gets more out of what he has than any other quaterback in the league. This quarterback is the closest thing we have to Joe Montana in the league today - who by the way was also criticized for the same things.

Now that he has arrived, football card collectors are taking notice. His card values have gone up substantially. However, if he has another couple of seasons like this one the value is only at the beginning not the end. The Drew Brees 2001 Upper Deck SP Rookie Card Jersey are some of the best rookie football cards on the market. They feature a great jersey patch with a nice action photo of the young Drew Brees.

What are the hottest rookie football cards of the 2008 NFL season? This can best be answered by looking at the what cards are being sold in the most quantity and volume in the marketplace.

One of the best ways to look at what cards are hot is to look at ebay and some of the related tools that help analyze ebay trends. When looking at Ebay and the trend over the last 2 weeks the highest priced cards on the list are auto rookie cards. Some of the selected cards that are going for very high prices include: Matt Forte, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Darrin McFadden. The auto rookie cards of these future NFL superstars are already going for values greater than $200.

If we use the terapeak analyzer of items being sold on ebay. Using the term 2008 Rookie Football Card. We can see that in the last 7 days, over 260 items were listed on ebay with over 130 of those items selling. These items fetched an average price of over $19.00 per item sold on ebay. Of the sets of rookie cards being sold the: 2008 UD SP Rookie Edition NFL Football Sealed Hobby Box is the most popular set being sold this year.

If you are considering this hobby as an investment opportunity use these tools often to get a general pulse of what the trading community is buying and selling.

The reason I started card collecting back in the 1970's was pretty simple. Having cards of the great players was a cool thing to do. I always collected more football cards than baseball cards and at the time the really cool rookie football cards to own were Franco Harris , Walter Payton and of course any Minnesota Vikings card (because I live in Minnesota).

As a kid, we use to trade cards and talk about who was going to have a great year and who was better. I remember riding my bike down to the store every saturday to buy a pack of cards hoping to get a card of my favorite players. In the end it became a hobby that I have continued in for all of these years. The cards today are of higher quality and have much better graphics that the old cards. All of the cards have gone up in value significantly since then, but it still remains as a great hobby and way to have some fun while following your favorite football teams.
